10.09.2008 - Prague Mayor Bem for expulsion of two ODS deputies

In its recent programme, the commercial television station Nova said Morava had tried to collect sensitive information about politicians from the ODS and other parties in order to make them vulnerable to extortion.

According to Nova, Morava tried to spread sensitive photographs featuring Tlusty, but it was Tlusty who had intentionally organised taking of the photographs along with journalists and played the role of a provocateur.

Tlusty said he had prepared "the bait" in an effort to uncover dirty practices among deputies.

The party is being seriously harmed by the scandal and hundreds of members are considering leaving it, Bem said.

It will be difficult to succeed in the autumn elections to the regional assemblies and the Senate, he added.

did not entirely reject the notion that he might seek the post of party leader at the congress in November.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister and party leader Mirek Topolanek made conditional his repeated candidature on change in internal mechanisms and a purification of the party.

As recently as early August, Bem, widely considered Topolanek's chief rival in the party, refused the idea that he might run for the post of party leader.

Topolanek said his rhetoric was targetted on the ODS rank and file.

"The ODS must undergo a certain catharsis and it must offer a comprehensible solution to the public as it is impossible for the things that have surfaced in the scandal to repeat," Topolanek said.

He said he would go to the congress with a clear vision of the internal party structure and mechanisms as well as a new vision for the Czech Republic.

Bem said he did not fully understand what Topolanek wanted to do.

"Every politician must start with himself.

He must have clear limits of his own behaviour," Bem said.

The bad conduct of two senior party members cannot be extended to the whole ODS rank and file, he added.

"99.9 percent of ODS members are normal decent people who do not need any purification in this respect," Bem said.

Morava has said he would leave the Chamber of Deputies, while Tlusty insists on his position.

His departure is demanded by Topolanek, the party leadership and some regional party branches.
