The US department of defence has cancelled a competition between Boeing and Northrop Grumman-EADS for a contract to build the next generation of air force refuelling tankers.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates said in a statement that the issue was too politically charged and could not be completed before President George W. Bush leaves office in January. The contract to build 179 tankers was originally awarded to the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company and its US partners Northrop.
