Commemorations of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks have begun in New York, at the site of the former World Trade Centre towers.
Crowds held a minute's silence at 8:46am, to mark the exact time that the first of two hi-jacked passenger jets struck the towers. Another minutes' silence at 9:06 is to mark the second impact. Two minutes of silence are also planned to mark the moments at which the towers collapsed.
