Lavrov's statement contradicted an earlier comment by South Ossetia's leader, Eduard Kokoity, who said South Ossetia wanted union with Russia. Koikoty said his words had been misinterpreted. Lavrov is in Warsaw for talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. He said Russia wanted convincing guarantees that the planned missile and radar installations are not aimed against Moscow. Lavrov also implied that Russia's attitude to the missile shield could hinge on the West's conduct over the breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia says US plans to establish an anti-missile shield in NATO members Poland and the Czech Republic will upset the balance of power by undermining its own nuclear deterrent.
