Earlier, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg led the first of two separate minutes of silence to mark the moment two hijacked passenger planes flew into the city's Twin Towers. Around 3,000 people were killed in the co-ordinated series of attacks, which used passenger planes to ram the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
