Security officials in Pakistan say their forces have killed up to 100 militants on the Afghan border.
An official said that "80 to 100 militants were killed in Bajaur today, most of them are foreigners".
There is no independent confirmation.
The announcement came as it emerged that President George W Bush had secretly approved US military raids inside Pakistan against the militants.
Pakistan has said it will not allow foreign forces onto its territory.
