Spain's Constitutional Court has blocked a plan by Basque authorities to stage a referendum on the self-determination of the northern region.
The court unanimously upheld a move by the Madrid government and the main opposition Popular Party to suspend the October 25 referendum which the Basque parliament approved by a narrow majority in June. Basque Prime Minister Juan Jose Ibarretxe said if the vote was blocked, members of his government would take their case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
