Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in France for his first papal visit to the country known as "eldest daughter" of the Roman Catholic Church.
The pontiff flew to Paris where he was greeted at the airport by President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni. The four-day trip will feature a keynote address on the role of religion in society, an open-air mass in Paris on Saturday, and a pilgrimage to the southern French town of Lourdes, where Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant girl 150 years ago.
