The US State Department has announced it was expelling Venezuela's ambassador to Washington in retaliation for the expulsion of the US envoy to Caracas.
The move was announced after the US Treasury said it was freezing any US assets of two senior Venezuelan officials and a former official after accusing them of aiding Colombian rebels involved in drug trafficking. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez expelled the US ambassador to Venezuela and recalled his own from the United States out of solidarity with Bolivia, which has accused the US of fomenting unrest in the country and pulled its own ambassador from the US this week.
