The US state of Texas is bracing for Hurricane Ike, which is expected to make landfall late this Friday or early on Saturday. Forecasters say Ike will likely hit the gulf coast near the city of Galveston and that by then, it could develop into a Category 3 storm.
The National Weather Service has warned that people in coastal areas could face the possibility of death from a massive storm surge. Officials also said Ike could flood as many as 100,000 homes. More than a million people are said to be on the move, fleeing from the approaching hurricane. US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has described Ike as potentially catastrophic. A quarter of the nation's oil production facilities have been shut down in anticipation of damage.
