13.09.2008 - Georgia - Russia begins pullback

Russian troops have reportedly begun a withdrawal from Georgia proper, within a deadline agreed with the European Union.

News agency correspondents say 70 Russian troops in vehicles have left their first camp near Georgia's strategic Black Sea port of Poti. pro-Russian region of South Ossetia. Early this week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, mediating on behalf of the EU, secured a pullback promise from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The deal allows for the deployment of 200 EU observers. Russia has said it will retain several thousand troops in South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia. Georgia is a key transist region for oil and gas deliveries to the West.
