What's now being described as a "monster" hurricane is bearing down on the US state of Texas.
Hurricane Ike has begun lashing the Texas gulf coast with strong winds and heavy rains. The US National Weather Service has warned that people in coastal areas could be killed by a massive storm surge that is expected to hit the Galveston area. Officials say Ike could flood as many as 100,000 homes, and more than a million people are said to be on the move, fleeing from the approaching hurricane. US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has described Ike as potentially catastrophic. Oil production facilities in the gulf, which account for a quarter of the United States' oil production, have been shut down.
