Hurricane Ike, a giant storm which has already left 100 dead in the Caribbean, is bearing down on the US state of Texas and its oil port hub of Houston.
Officials say Ike will thrust a six-metre high ocean surge over 160 kilometres of coastline. More than a million Texans have fled inland, but another 100,000 remain.
