Officials say that Ike could thrust a six-metre high ocean surge over coastal areas. More than one million Texans have fled inland, but 100,000 have decided to remain in spite of officials warning them that they risk losing their lives. Giant waves have already swamped parts of the island city of Galveston. It is estimated that over four million people are without power in the area because of the storm which is currently heading towards Houston, a city of five million inhabitants.
