Hurricane Ike to strengthen before hitting Texas ... a tropical storm over eastern Texas.
After making landfall on the island city of Galveston early on Saturday the hurricane powered across the densely populated Texas coast and through the city of Houston. Millions in Texas and Louisiana are without power. More than one million Texans fled inland and many roads remain impassable. Emergency crews are just starting to assess the damage caused by the storm which, it is thought, will run to billions of dollars. President George W. Bush has declared Texas a major disaster area in the wake of the hurricane.
