Samak Sundaravej was stipped of his powers last week by Thailand's constitutional court. Caretaker prime minister Somchai Wongsawat who lifted the emergency restrictions on Sunday said he did so after consulting senior officials, including army chief General Anupong Paojinda who had refused to evict the protestors. Parliament is due to meet on Wednesday to choose a new prime minister.
