Hurricane Ike has weakened to a tropical storm leaving the US states of Texas and Louisiana with heavy coastal flooding and widespread damage but no confirmed fatalities.
Rescuers using boats and helicopters have picked up hundreds of survivors. Texas' oil city of Houston has been left paralysed, with its streets littered with debris, including glass from the shattered windows of skyscapers. Texas governor Rick Perry says "very heavy damage" to power grids has left 4.5 million people without electricity. Outages could last weeks.
