In Turkmenistan at least 20 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and suspected Islamist extremists.
The Turkmen foreign ministry said that police had clashed with "a criminal group involved in the illegal drug trade" in the capital Ashgabat. The statement did not give details on the fighting, which the exiled Turkmen opposition described as a bloody clash between government forces and an extremist religious group. The neighbourhood in Ashgabat's northern suburbs where the fighting took place has been sealed off by the state authorities. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International have said that widespread rights violations continue in Turkmenistan.
