Rwandans have started heading to the polls in a four-day parliamentary election.
A coalition led by President Paul Kagame's Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR) is expected to win the poll. Opposition parties were reportedly banned until just before the elections, and bodies such as Amnesty International said that opposition politicians faced a campaign of "political pressure, violence and intimidation." The European Union has sent a 67-strong observer team to monitor the elections. Official results are expected within ten days. Burundi arrests 'rebel recruits' ... vote marks Rwanda's second election since the 1994 genocide, when the Hutu militia and military massacred 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in the space of a few months. The genocide came to an end when Tutsi-dominated FPR forces led by Kagame invaded Rwanda.
