Two consecutive car bombings have killed at least 12 people and wounded 32 others in a downtown area of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The attacks in al-Karada district came only minutes after United States Defence Secretary Robert Gates arrived in the city on an unexpected visit.

US Senate approves Petraeus' role ... called a "historic role" in reducing violence in Iraq. Washington and Iraq are currently negotiating a controversial security pact to govern the presence of US-led troops in Iraq when a UN mandate expires at the end of the year.
