NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has expressed his solidarity with Georgia after its war with Russia over the two breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
De Hoop Scheffer said he was in Georgia to set up a new commission to discuss security in the region and to help enhance the relationship between NATO and Georgia. However, he could not say if Georgia would be offered a route to NATO membership at an alliance summit in December. Russia warns Georgia over troop detention ... 200 ceasefire monitors to Georgia by October 1. Russia has pledged to withdraw its troops from the Georgian heartland within 10 days of the deployment of the monitors, but 7,600 troops will remain in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The EU's executive also pledged 500 million euros in reconstruction aid to Georgia.
