The lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag, will be discussing next year's federal budget on Tuesday.
A draft by Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück envisages spending of 288.4 billion euros, some five billion euros up on the current year. Net new borrowing is to be reduced by 1.4 billion euros to 10.5 billion. The coalition government is planning to achieve a balanced budget by 2011. The Bundestag, will also be debating the extension of the mandate of its troops in the naval component of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon by 15 months. The government also wants lawmakers to approve the extension of Germany's peace mission in Sudan by another year.
