Thai lawmakers have elected Somchai Wongsawat as a new consensus-candidate for the post of prime minister.
The 61-year old is the brother-in-law of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and has been heading a care-taker government since Samak Sundaravej was sacked by a court last week. The choice of Somchai is unlikely to placate anti-government protestors, who have been camping at government offices for weeks. They insist they will not accept any prime minister drawn from the ruling People's Power Party, which is made up of Thaksin's allies.
