The scandal involving tainted baby milk in China is widening after a toxic chemical was also found in liquid milk.
Supermarkets in China and Hong Kong have removed dairy products of big brand names Yili, Mengniu and Guangming after government tests uncovered traces of melamine, a chemical usually used in plastics. Thousands of babies have been affected and at least four have died after drinking milk powder containing the toxin. The European Commission director for health and consumer protection said no problem milk products had been reported in Europe. The EU is China's largest trading partner and has in the past expressed concern Beijing does not do enough to tackle product and consumer safety issues.
