Olmert lawyers quiz businessman ... of Israel's ruling Kadima party Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has called on it to heal its rifts and on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to quickly complete his intended resignation which he signalled in July.
A spokesman for Olmert, who's plagued by corruption allegations, said he would notify cabinet on Sunday and then hand a formal letter of resignation to President Shimon Peres. Opposition Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded early general elections, saying Livni's narrow leadership victory within Kadima on Wednesday was insufficient to give her a popular mandate among Israelis. She beat a Kadima rival Transport Minister Paul Mofaz, who stayed away from Friday's meeting of the party, saying instead that he'd decided to take a break. Livni needs to form a new coalition within 42 days, or accept new elections. Until now centrist Kadima has depended on the support of left-wing Labour and a variety of other groups.
