On Friday, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced a plan to buy troubled assets from financial companies that he and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said could cost close to one trillion dollars. Stock markets in the US and Europe greeted the rescue plan with strong rallies.
