German police say they arrested 500 people after violent protests by leftists against a far-right rally in the western city of Cologne.
Police said most of the estimated 40,000 anti-right protesters had been peaceful. The street battles came on the sidelines of a two-day congress organised by right-wing extremists, on the purportedly growing dominance of Europe's Muslim minority and the construction of one of Europe's largest mosques in Cologne.
